This is not True, my virtual background has been working ever since i bought my Surface Pro X SQ2 3 months ago, as of last week it was still working, i just notice today at my zoom meeting the the virtual background feature is greyed out now now it states that this computer does not support virtual background Solved: download the zoom 32bit version, bypass the upgrade to latest version prompt and you can use the virtual background in the 32bit version.
Thanks for this tip, sadly didn’t work for me. I just got my X a couple of days ago and this is really frustrating. Along with it not being able to install express vpn. You tip does enable the option for virtual backgrounds but when I go to choose one they’re all greyed out and state that my device doesn’t support the feature. Would really like someone from MS to follow up as based on posts I’ve come across this is a very recent issue.
Why does my computer not support the virtual background setting in ZOOM? Not sure I understand why you think Zoom updating their app and breaking support for virtual backgrounds is Microsoft’s fault.
I would encourage you to contacting Zoom support as John Neil recommended and ask them to release a native ARM app for Windows, as that’s the real fix. I will try to do so too. I haven’t tried it yet, but maybe the x64 emulation will fix the issue with the newer Zoom app.
I’ll try to test it when I have a chance. Thing is, people on here small sample, I know were saying it worked fine until a couple of weeks ago. I’ve had my X for less than a week now, I uninstalled and rebooted, have tried the 32 bit Zoom version as well as installing Zoom 5.
Zoom is on 5. Regardless of which it is, I agree that Zoom need to release a native ARM app for true compatibility going forward. I haven’t used zoom for a couple months maybe or at least haven’t updated it , so the version on my Pro X is currently 5. It looks like I can still select virtual backgrounds no problem, though I haven’t actually joined a meeting. I’ve upgraded it to Windows 11 from the developer channel, so I would think if it was something Microsoft broke it would have broken on mine too, since I’m on newer code than someone not running a dev build of Windows.
Of course that introduces other variables so I guess it’s hard to say for certain. Edit: I joined a test meeting and the background worked just fine.
Oddly enough, it’s not prompting to upgrade. I guess that’s why it’s still at 5. I’ll do some more testing with upgrading it etc when I can I’ve only recently re-joined the insiders program and running the Beta channel, may move up to the Dev channel since I’m not depending on my X as a daily driver.
If I’ve read correctly, X64 emulation is currently only available in builds on the Dev channel and not in Beta until late August at the earliest. The upgrade from 5. The next test meeting I joined prompt me to “upgrade to a version compatible with your device” which switched it to the bit version.
The virtual backgrounds option is now unavailable. Got an auto-reply that my ticket was automatically closed since I don’t have a paid account. Kind of annoying, and I’m not sure if that’s a temporary thing or what, the wording was somewhat inconclusive Choose where you want to search below Search Search the Community.

Hi SteveW68 Well, can you provide your system specifications, so that we can double-check that you meet the system requirements for Virtual Background?
I have the same problem and says doesnt support virtual background. Your processor is what is not meeting the system requirements. Your processor is a 2nd generation i5 processor with 2 cores. The virtual background system requirements state you must have at least a 3rd generation i5 processor with 2 cores. Your processor is also a 2nd Generation the 2 in i model is the generation , so it does not meet the requirements for image without a green screen as listed.
If your Zoom virtual background is not working during your video calls and you are wondering why you can’t get Zoom backgrounds , there might be a few different culprits to blame. In addition to different operating system requirements for using a virtual background without a green screen, Zoom also has certain tips to help you get the optimal virtual background. It’s best to have a solid color backdrop, preferably green, and to not wear clothing that’s the same color as the background.
Your background image will work best with an aspect ratio of and minimum resolution of by pixels. If you’re uploading a MP4 or MOV video, it’ll need to have a minimum resolution of pixels and a maximum resolution of pixels. First things first, you’ll want to make sure your PC or Mac system is running an up-to-date version of the Zoom Desktop Client 4.
You only need version 3. Can you confirm that Zoom is otherwise working on your computer, other than Virtual Backgrounds? I know at least one person running Zoom on Windows 11 – but I know they would not have been using Virtual Backgrounds. The OS was updated from W10 within a couple of days of purchasing. I have not yet noticed any other problems, having used Zoom for several meetings in the last couple of days.
I Wanted to know if it worked with the Pentium Gold as I’m looking to buy a laptop with this processor? My Laptop is a brand new one with the W11 update.
Is just zoom, the one giving me the background issue. Other than that, works fine. Please, help us on this! I need to use the background for work. Thank you Rupert. I too could not use the virtual backgrounds but I installed Zoom again using the link you provided for the 64 bit and now I am in Zoom virtual background la la land!
Thank you so much for providing the link. I am still convinced that somewhere in the code is a table of acceptable operating systems – and W11 is not among them! Since this machine was able to jump Microsoft’s high hurdle to install W11, I am sure that it is not deficient. After installing the linked version and finding that backgrounds were still unsupported, I checked for updates.
That version was 5. I hoped that Mepemep’s success was because Zoom had slipped in a sly fix, but I was disappointed. I downloaded from the link provided and I was able to participate in my meeting successfully with a selected virtual background. As I was closing down the app I checked to see what version I was on and I noticed that there was an update available. I updated to 5. Yes, I am running Windows I also am a Tech professional so I know my stuff.
Zoom is working perfectly for me. Sorry that you don’t have the same experience. Help me! What did you do to get a virtual background to work on Windows 11? I was in touch with Zoom just today and they said Windows 11 does not support a virtual background and I should “work around” on another machine. Not an option and Zoom is no help! Sorry Zoom but this is ridiculous!
Especially for paying customers! So I am supposed to downgrade my system for a virtual background? Doesn’t make sense! I thought that it was just the issue of W11 being left off the list of operating systems, but others have said that they have got backgrounds to work. I can only conclude that the restriction applies to machines with shared display memory, everything else checks out.
However features like eyebrow tracking work, which I would think called for more vision processing ingenuity, so maybe Zoom will get around to the background problem one day. Are you having problems with static image backgrounds or with video backgrounds? I found that I can use static ones but not video. I am using Windows 10, but I wonder if the same thing happens with Windows 11, or if Windows 11 is more restrictive as to the hardware you must have for video backgrounds.
I’d be happy with a static image! If I select ‘I have a green screen’ that can be enabled, but all the background clutter shows through. In all such cases, such as the ‘upgrade to W11’ test, there should be a ‘I accept that my system might cause problems’ button should force a pass to the test. Friend has an Asus windows 10 laptop with the and gets the message saying the specs are not up to it.
Which suggests Zoom perhaps do not recognise it, even though it’s better than previous gen i3’s that they allow.. I don’t understand why they would have that requirement, when there is no similar requirement for Intel processors. I am having the same issues and I have the same processor.. So it means we can’t use background for now then? Actually, it seems to be more complicated. I downgraded to Windows 10 and I am still having the same problem.
And with another computer, a desktop with an Intel processor, Core i7, 4 cores, 3. Something is wrong with Zoom. I suspect that the problem is the shared video memory. It is interesting that the face recognition features, like party hat and eyebrows, do not seem to need that video memory. Perhaps background recognition will catch up soon.
Incidentally, last year their were party features like Christmas hats and antlers. I wonder when they will appear! I think I know why the Core i7, 3. They want 6th generation or higher. Mine is 3rd generation, while the Core i5, 2.
